We are excited and honored to be participating in NOAA Fisheries’ new Atlantic mackerel research initiative.

This important $2.3 million cooperative research program brings together scientists and members of the Northeast fishing industry to improve our understanding of Atlantic mackerel populations and help strengthen future stock assessments and fishery management. More than 50 fishing vessels are expected to participate in various aspects of the project.

As part of our contribution, we will be collecting 100 Atlantic mackerel per week for four weeks and submitting them for scientific analysis. Researchers will examine the samples to determine age, sex, reproductive status, and spawning activity, providing valuable information about the health and dynamics of the stock.

The overall study will also include advanced acoustic surveys, tagging efforts to better understand movement between U.S. and Canadian waters, and egg surveys to improve our understanding of spawning patterns.

We are proud to work alongside NOAA Fisheries and fellow fishermen to help gather the data needed to better understand and manage this important resource for future generations.
